Hey the holidays are coming. I love the holidays. I don’t really like snow unless its on Christmas but I guess everything can’t be perfect in life. With the holidays I wanted to share with you guys my experience with recording the recent Christmas album. I wanted to do a Christmas album for awhile.
It started with skype with Mr. Simon Illa from ATL to Utah. We went through several tracks and I decided to start with Silent Night. Its a classic song and I have always loved it because it is so soothing.
It was one of the first Christmas songs I learned to sing when I was a kid. Matt Beck played the guitar track from New York and was playing with Edina Menzel at the time we were recording the album. He did it in one take and it sounded beautiful. He sent the track back to ATL where I recorded the vocals.
The second song was Still, Still, Still and to my surprise nobody knew this song. Crazy because it has such a great melody. Priscilla played the piano in ATL I flew in to record the vocals. We added some amazing strings in a couple of the songs put in by Alex Page and Grace Shim. You can listen to a sample of this song Here
Santa Baby I just wanted to do one fun live acoustic set. Daniel Groover another amazing musician played the guitar and we did it in two takes. He was just awarded I believe for a playing the guitar on the Pussy Cat Dolls last album so super congrats to him! The main man I have to thank is Mr. Simon Illa.
We had been skyping for a good 4 months going over this album. He was the main producer on the album. Its Christmas and Favorite Time Of Year came about by Simon sending sample tracks to me. He sent over about 20 different tracks. When I heard the tracks for It’s Christmas and Favorite Time Of Year they were pretty basic but I could hear where they could go. I seriously spent hours and hours writing lyrics and melodies. NOTHING. Its weird how sometimes you can write a song in a hour and another song can take months.
Time was getting tight. We started working on the album in June and it was coming up on October. Im not going to lie I was stressing out. I already had a ticket to fly to ATL to record the vocals and we had already booked the studio. I felt so good about doing this album I just knew I had to have faith that it was going to work out.
Crazy and a gamble yes! I decided on this album that I wanted to finance it myself. I had the opportunity to have a couple of people pay for it but I decided it was something I wanted to do. Side note- Thank you also to all of you amazing people that purchased my album and have gone to my shows this is a big thank you to you because some of the money went into this album!
In the music business anytime you can invest your time and money you have 100% creative control which is extremely important to me and the album can be released when you want to release it.
Oct came up and I was flying out and only had three songs for the album. Sometimes pressure is bad and sometimes I would say its good for me. I had to knock out two more songs and sing five tracks in one week. Doable yes.
The best plan probably not. The night I flew in it just started coming out “Its Christmas” began to come together. It was magical and beautiful. It’s like finishing a painting. I can’t even explain how beautiful it is. The next song “Favorite Time Of Year” I felt like the album was too serious and just needed something fun. I thought about all the fun and exciting things about Christmas and it just all came together.
With a lot of sweat and there was going to be tears if I couldn’t get it finished. We went into the studio and for 5 straight 14 hours days we knocked out the Christmas EP album. I was soo soo lucky and overcome with Joy to finish it. The album cover was the Cherry on the cake and designed by Dave Tucker.
There were hundreds of hours put into this album and every album I have released and I really hope people enjoy it. If you made it to the end of this blog than man you are a super star! – Love ya Margie
